Book Tour: 29 Palms Book Festival
I’m really excited to be joining the lineup at the 29 Palms Book Festival on Saturday, November 8!
11:30 AM – The Enduring Wild: A Conversation with Josh Jackson.
Join environmental writer and photographer Josh Jackson for an intimate conversation about his acclaimed book The Enduring Wild: A Journey into California’s Public Lands. Guided by interviewer Alicia Pike, Jackson will share insights into his journeys across 41 of California’s landscapes, from the Mojave Desert to the Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness in Mendocino County. Through his words and photography, he captures the beauty of places many have never seen, while revealing the staggering scale of America’s public lands—618 million acres in total, with 245 million managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Jackson’s work blends storytelling, conservation, and visual arts to illuminate how public lands, “our common ground,” are both a gift and a responsibility. His book reminds us that protecting fragile environments requires not only professional activists but everyday citizens willing to take a stand. Alicia Pike, a lifelong advocate for animals and the desert, brings her own passion and accessible style to the conversation, creating a dialogue that celebrates the power of narrative to inspire action and deepen our collective connection to the land.

Lost Coast Camping Trip
Join Usal and Forgotten Lands Project for a weekend of camping on California’s magical Lost Coast.
Join Usal and Forgotten Lands Project for a weekend of camping on California’s scenic Lost Coast, where free-flowing rivers wind through towering forests and mountains plunge into the sea. This stretch of coast remains one of the wildest places in California — and the state’s longest undeveloped shoreline — a landscape of fog-draped headlands, windswept prairies, and lagoons alive with birdlife where solitude still feels possible.
By day, we’ll follow the trails that crisscross the northern tip of the King Range National Conservation Area. The Lost Coast Trail winds across black-sand beaches and leads to the historic Punta Gorda Lighthouse, where elephant seals and sea lions bask across rocky islets. Inland, other paths carry us through mossy, old-growth forests that echo the feel of a temperate rainforest, and along coastal prairies with sweeping views of the Pacific.
Evenings will bring us back to our riverside camp along the free-flowing Mattole River, where we’ll share meals, circle the fire, and watch stars brighten the dark sky.

Join Usal and Forgotten Lands Project for a weekend of camping in California’s Eastern Sierra, where autumn paints the aspens gold and mountain air carries the first hints of winter. This is the season when the high country feels most alive — crisp mornings, glowing canyon walls, and lakes reflecting fire-bright foliage.
Our basecamp will sit at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, giving us easy access to hiking trails, natural hot springs, and sweeping vistas. Along the way, we’ll also visit a remarkable geothermal site where steaming vents and mineral-rich waters reveal the volcanic forces that shaped this landscape. Evenings will bring us back to camp for shared meals and a campfire under the stars.
